My Experience at Oblate Institute of Higher Learning

My name is Chrishmari Rashmiya. One of the students from the very first batch of Dev Arana Oblate Institute of Higher Learning and a student of post A/L batch 2024. The very first thing Rev. Fr. Asanga told us was; “To learn this language, you have to unlearn what you have learned.”
Embarking on an English course was a pivotal decision in my journey towards language proficiency. The course, designed to hone communication skills, encompassed various modules catering to reading, writing, listening, and speaking. One of the most beneficial aspects of the course was its structured approach. Each module delved into specific language components, gradually advancing from basic to complex concepts. Moreover, the interactive nature of the course fostered active participation. Engaging in group discussions, debates, and role-plays not only enhanced my speaking abilities but also broadened my perspective on diverse topics. Collaborating with my colleagues from different linguistic backgrounds provided a rich learning environment, encouraging cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
But what truly made the experience memorable was the bond formed with my classmates. Together, we tackled challenging assignments, engaged in spirited discussions, and shared countless laughs. Towards the middle of the course, we got the opportunity to go on a picnic to Galle and even organized a Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration. Hence, the course was not just an opportunity to learn, but also a chance to forge lasting friendships. As we progressed through the course, our confidence in ourselves in English grew significantly. What started as hesitant sentences, soon blossomed into fluent speeches and thought-provoking essays. Through collaborative projects and peer feedback, we supported each other’s growth and celebrated our collective achievements.
As the course drew to a close, I realized that the true essence of learning lies not only in the obtainment of knowledge but also in the relationships we build along the way. The course was a priceless and transformative experience that enriched my mind and soul. Hence I’m truly grateful for the enriching experience that the course has provided.
